Mixed numbers are a combination of a whole number plus a proper fraction.

Example:34 9 = 3 +4 9 - 1
In order to subtract mixed fractions that have an identical denominator, we subtract the whole numbers together, then the numerators together, and keep the denominator the same.

Example:34 9 -23 9 34 9 -23 9 = 3 - 2 +4 9 -3 9 = 1 +4 - 3 9 =11 9 - 2
Simplify the fraction if possible, in this example, the result already simplified.

Convert fractions to improper fractions and make regular calculation

Mixed number to an improper fraction (improper fraction has the numerator bigger than the denominator), get the numerator of the improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and added to the numerator, and for the denominator remains the same.

Example how to convert mixed fraction to improper fraction:

ab c =a x c + b c example:31 3 -43 5 31 3 -43 5 =3 x 3 + 1 3 -4 x 5 + 3 5 =10 3 -23 5 =(10 x 5) - (23 x 3) 3 x 5 =-19 15 =-14 15 more about improper fraction and simplifying click here

In order to subtract mixed fractions with different denominators, we should make both denominators identical before subtracting(how to make denominator identical), then we subtract like the example of subtracting mixed fractions with common denominators

Example:43 4 -32 3 - 1
Subtract the whole numbers together, and make fractions have the same denominator. more about subtracting proper fractions click here

43 4 -32 3 43 4 -32 3 = 4 - 3 +3 4 -2 3 = 1 +3 x 3 4 x 3 -2 x 4 3 x 4 =11 12 - 2
